Measuring principle

Probe structure

Structure of probe is as shown left. Transmitter oscillator are dual purpose parts that send out ultrasonic waves and simultaneously receive reflected waves from upper surface of test object (S-echo). Receiver oscillator receives reflected waves from bottom of test object (B-echo).

Principle of ultrasonic thickness gauge

TI series adopt pulse reflection method which measures thickness by time interval that ultrasonic wave goes and returns in the object. Block diagram showed above explains a flow of thickness measurement by the method.

Some parts of ultrasonic wave(a) sent from transmitter oscillator are reflected at the surface of test object (b), and becomes results surface echo (S). Some parts of ultrasonic wave which penetrate into test object are reflected by the bottom surface (c), and results bottom echo (B). Ultrasonic wave travelling time(TI) can be checked by counting clock pulses between S echo and B echo, if ultrasonic waves are generated with unique propagation velocity(CI) of a material in a fixed interval.

Time between detections of S echo and B echo is represented in an equation showed below which can be utilized to measure object thickness.

Ultrasonic thickness gauges measure thickness from acoustic propagation velocity of material and time interval between S echo and B echo, and indicates thickness value on LCD. It is required to set correct acoustic propagation velocity to achieve correct measurement.
